Why I admire Jon Stewart

The man is the voice of a dissheveled, discontent youth. The ‘60s had their singer/songwriter revolutionary rockers to guide them, but thanks to the diluting of the music business and the near impossibility of anyone purveying a message to the masses and that message being taken seriously are next to nothing. He brings real wit into the political arena, and the sad thing is that all the wit lies in pointing out the ridiculousness of the mass-media/politics in general.

How I met Vincent Gallo

Don’t believe the asshole front he has up all the time. The guy is by far one of the nicest I’ve met. I met him at a private Mars Volta show. We talked for a little bit and he was great. The picture included is my friend with him.

How I met Rivers Cuomo

I got to meet this guy at a private show for the Mars Volta. He laughed at me when I fell off my chair when I saw Omar. We talked a bit, snapped a picture. He was pretty quiet, but overall very nice.

A story about Omar A Rodriguez-Lopez

I got to go to a private show of theirs in LA a while before De-Loused came out. I didn’t get to meet Cedric at that point but I ended up pouring my heart out to Omar about how important At the Drive-In was for my development. He didn’t really react much. Lesson (which has helped me with every other artist I’ve met afterwards): Don’t treat them like royalty. They don’t give a shit. Just hang out with them and they will think you are awesome and remember you.

A story about Cedric Bixler-Zavala

I watched Iggy Pop with this fool. He is surprisingly awesome and sweet. A wonderful guy, really. He’s been a hero of mine since 8th grade, and it was awesome getting to hang out with him.

How I met Wayne Coyne

At the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Long Beach, I was walking back from watching Sufjan Stevens and happened upon him. He was in a hurry but he spared my friend and I about ten minutes for chatting. He was wonderfully polite and incredibly nice. I didn’t get to take a picture of him but he did sign something for me. A++ would meet again.

A story about Isaac Brock

I have met him twice so far, both times at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festivals in Long Beach, California. The first time I had had a backstage pass and had gotten all my friends in. They saw him in his trailer and got scared, and I was the only one with the guts to go up to him. He invited us in, and we ended up chatting a while, gettings things signed, and taking gangsta pictures. The second time I didn’t have a backstage pass, but he happened to walk by while all my friends were around. We caught him and started talking a while. My friend took a picture while we were talking and he got mock angry and was going to leave, but then he asked us for a cigarette. I mentioned a friend of mine who, if he was there, would roll him the best cigarette he’s had. Lo and behold, said friend is suddenly right behind me and is already offering to make one. We talk longer, and a line is forming behind us to get the chance to talk to him. We take a few pictures, and he takes off into the night. THE END.

(ps that is me leaning on him)

My favorite memory of Ryland Bouchard

I got to see Ryland Bouchard playing as The Robot Ate Me in a little cafe in San Diego, where he is originally from. During the song Genocide Ball, he got everyone to start dancing around. My friend, who had fallen in love with him and had wanted to live vicariously through me, pointed at me and pushed me towards him, at which point he took me up in his arms and we danced. He apologized to me for being a bad dancer. Eventually he had to go back to singing, and he threw me towards another young man who was a great dancer. Later on during Apricot Tea he had everyone sing along, and I got the mic shoved in my face every time. Later, when he was looking for a song to play, I suggested Red Haired Girl. My friend decided to holler that it was my birthday, so he said he would sing it for me, which he did, with his eyes on me for every verse. It was all in all a wonderful experience, and he is an amazing artist and performer. Even without all of these special personal details it would have been an incredible show.
